Addressing Challenges in Mitigating Circumstances Management
Student voices their opinion on what HEI’s should do with the current system for mitigating circumstances- “Maintain confidentiality considering the sensitivity of some cases which the student may not wish any other person to know”
Clarity is Essential for Students and Staff
Types of Mitigating Circumstances
- Bereavement to a relative or close friend
- Short-term illness or an accident
- Sudden financial issues
- Being a victim of a serious crime (burglary, sexual assault, discrimination etc)
- Severe mental or emotional stress
Guidelines of sufficient evidence are required to accept the application from the student. This creates a criteria which prevents students from lying about illness or an event. HEI’s have to prepare for all students who have issues with attending their classes or submitting assignment.
Solutions for Issues with Mitigating Circumstances Management
It is clear that improving how we manage mitigating circumstances is a viable option which all HEI’s must consider. Student wellbeing is a priority for every institute in the current climate and tackling an issue of this size will lead to successful results. Developing a better institute rapport will be another benefit of this, which can help with attracting more students in the future.
